I love the smell of coffee, but I can’t stand the taste. Yesterday morning while waiting to do my timetable for uni, I was reading a blog post (by The Forage) about natural dyes and clicking through various YouTube videos and I was inspired to dye one of my white cotton skirts. I don’t have a backyard full of great botanicals that I could use, so I tried a coffee and tea dye instead.
I brewed a really strong pot of coffee and added a bunch of tea bags for extra colour. It worked fairly well, not as dark as I’d like, but I think that was because I didn’t leave it to sit long enough, and I rinsed it too soon. I’m going to do it again on the same skirt later this week to get the colour a bit darker, but I’m really happy with it so far.
The only unfortunate thing was that the skirt was the only white item of clothing I own, so there was nothing else that I could try dying! Have you used natural products to dye clothes before? I’ve also used beetroot juice, but that was mostly an accident I had to cover-up!
Ah, that is so cool that you tried it!! MUST. TRY. NOW.
Unfortunately, I’ve gotten rid of some black tea, my bf picked up while travelling, on one of my de-clutter sessions.. Ah, well, might just buy some cheap stuff and try it. Not sure if it needs something to bind it? You would reckon it doesn’t always, as you can already ruin your clothes with certain stains by accident(I wanna try some beetroot and red cabbage).
Today am grateful for sweet blog readers giving me nice feedback on my posts and trying out some of the things I post about!:)
Something to bind it might help, but I’m going to treat it the opposite way I would a stain. I’m thinking for the next round I might wring it out and iron it and let it dry fully before rinsing it- heat is supposed to makes stains much harder to get out, so I figure it’ll work here! Red cabbage and beetroot would be a good combo, I’d try a traditional tie-dye pattern with those two, just for fun!
That’s good thinking, treat it the opposite you would a stain. Let me know how you go!:)
Will do!
I love coffee but it’s true that it does smell even better. I’ve tried dying with tea and coffe as well with moderate success. Beetroot is a good idea, or maybe red wine or tomato puree! Sounds like some experimenting is in order!
Red wine, of course! I think anything that leaves a hard to remove stain would be good to experiment with. Now I’m going to have to try all these ideas out!
